Midweek roundup
Football
Liverpool and Chelsea played out a feisty 0-0 draw in normal time of the second leg of their cup tie last night. Chelsea scored early in the 1st period of extra time to win 2-1 on aggregate. Having only watched part of it I do get frustrated at the lack of control players show towards each other and the officials. The rules state that you cannot raise your hand to anyone. If someone pushes someone else then they should be sent off. If referees started to do this then it would stop it happening. No excuses of it’s in the heat of the game, you are wrong so take yourself off. If they are not going to do it why bother to have the rule in the first place.
Tonight will see Tottenham take a 1-0 lead from the 1st leg to Bramall Lane as they play Sheffield United.
Still quiet on major transfer news with 5 full days left of the transfer window. West Brom have signed Callum McManaman from Wigan and Arsenal have signed defender Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal
Cricket
England will play India on the 30th for a place in the Tri-series final against the Australians.
Down under and The Perth Scorchers defended their BBL title against The Sydney Sixers. I have watched some of the games and they have been good quality games. Personally I think the franchise system would be a great way to go in this country too.
Tennis
Andy Murray has progressed nicely to the semi-finals of the Australian Open. He will meet Tomas Berdych who easily dispatched of Nadal in the quarters. The side story to this is that Berdych is being helped by Dani Vallverdu an ex-coach of Andy’s.
Boxing
Frankie Gavin has signed with Matchroom sports and will fight on the undercard of Kell Brook’s World Title fight in Sheffield.
Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather met face to face as they both attended a Miami Heat basketball game. By all accounts they swapped phone numbers! I wonder if the fight will be announced on Super Bowl Sunday.
Across the pond
NFL and the Patriots and Seahawks will be putting final preparations together for the big one this weekend.
NBA and the Atlanta Hawks have extended their winning run to 16 games. Cleveland is also on a roll winning 7 on the spin. The Knicks are of the bottom of the Eastern conference as the 76ers are on a 6 game losing streak. Golden State still lead the West but fans of the Lakers will be concerned as Kobe is injured and the Lakers are on a 9 game losing streak.
