Midweek round up
Football
The weekend saw the tragic shooting of South African footballer Senzo Meyiwa.
The Capital One cup is at the last 16 stage with Liverpool, Bournemouth, Sheffield United, Chelsea and Derby already in the quarter finals.
The first round proper of the FA cup has been drawn with Weston Super Mare getting the tie of the round against Doncaster.
Mark Clattenburg has been dropped from this week’s fixture for having a life outside of refereeing. How come he is never dropped for some of his bad decisions? Then again attending an Ed Sheeran gig maybe a bad decision!
Tennis
This week sees players playing in the Paris Masters, their season never seems to end. Andy Murray having won today only need one more win to guarantee his place in the World Tour Finals.
Boxing
The forgotten man David Price is hoping for a showdown with the winner of next month’s Fury vs Chisora fight.
Women’s sport
This week has seen the debate re-open on the money women get compared to the men. Listening to some experts they seem to place the problem on sponsorship. I think TV can play a more important role in promoting women’s sport.
Yes Sky show quite a bit of women’s sport, but why should people have to pay to watch women’s sport surely everyone should be able to see it.
Sky have such a monopoly and yes they do pay the governing bodies for the rights but surely the aim should be to get as many people watching it as possible.
There is a market out there the women’s football team have already sold 30, 000 tickets for a game at Wembley, that’s just less than 15,000 that saw the men’s team play Norway.
As a PE teacher there are not enough female role models in the public eye to promote women’s sport. Women are mainly seen in big events such as Olympics. TV bosses and Governing bodies need to address this. Women should be paid as equals to men they work just as hard. They should also be given the same coverage.
Across the pond
The World Series is turning into a classic. Sunday night saw the Giants take a 3-2 lead with a 5-0 victory. Last night could have seen them crowned champions for the 3rd time in 5 years only for the Royals to blast them out of the ballpark with a 10-0 victory. Tonight see’s the decider.
Unfortunately the joy in baseball is also soured after the death of Oscar Taveras at the weekend. The rising star of the St. Louis Cardinals lost his life in a car accident.
The NBA season got underway last night with last season champions the Spurs beating the Mavericks and the Lakers going down to the Rockets.
Having an NFL team based in London looms closer with high viewing figures in America for the very early kick-off Sunday at the estimated money a team in London could help make the city.
For anyone reading this please spare a moment to remember the 2 lives lost this weekend and that whatever happens to your team good or bad, at the end of the day it is only a game.
Prayers and thoughts with Oscar and Senzo’s family and friends.
